Kannada Kagunita — ಕಾಗುಣಿತ

How each Kannada consonant combines with every vowel to form syllables — with a worked example chart and printable practice tips.

What is kagunita?

Kagunita (ಕಾಗುಣಿತ) is the set of syllables you get when a consonant joins with each of the vowels. The consonant ಕ (ka), for instance, becomes ಕ ಕಾ ಕಿ ಕೀ ಕು ಕೂ … as it pairs with ಅ ಆ ಇ ಈ ಉ ಊ and the rest. Every consonant has its own kagunita row of 15 forms.

Kagunita is the bridge between knowing single letters and actually reading: real Kannada words are built from these consonant-plus-vowel syllables. Learn it after the swaragalu (vowels) and vyanjanagalu (consonants) are familiar.

Tips for learning kagunita

  • Learn one consonant's full row before moving to the next
  • Notice that the vowel signs (matras) are the same across every consonant
  • Say each syllable aloud — kagunita is as much about sound as shape
  • Start with everyday consonants (ಕ ಗ ಮ ನ ಪ) that appear in common words
  • Be sure the vowels and consonants are solid on their own first
